He watches her through the glass. She’s doing several things at once—perhaps a bit irrationally. She pets her cat with one hand and mixes something in a bowl with the other. Every now and then she stops and takes a drink from an over-sized mug beside her—a stick of cinnamon poking out of it like a flag. The bottle of spiced rum sitting nearby indicates the contents of the toddy.

It begins to snow. He does not feel the cold.

She’s baking something. She spreads the dough out with a rolling pin and begins to divide into shapes using little plastic cookie cutters. The black-and-white cat sniffs at the dough curiously, but the girl does not seem to mind. She pauses while carefully transferring one of the limp, yellow star-shapes to a ready pan. Her color-streaked blonde head turns to the window—meeting his eyes.

She cannot see him. But he feels a momentary pause in his perception of time. Her robin’s egg eyes look out through the glass—through it, and the snow, and him. He knows what she sees: the dark silhouettes of pine and a blue-gray world. He only sees her, wrapped in the warm light of her humble little house. She’s framed by little colored lights and sparkling tinsel. This is how he remembers her, although something has changed.

There is something in that face that he has never seen before. It isn’t a sadness, or a hardness. It’s weariness. He remembers the taste of sunshine in her voice, the smell of summer in her ever-changing hair. But there is no welcome for him here. Even if he were invited in, there would be nothing he could say to change what he has done to her.

He recedes into the evergreens, even as she turns back to her Christmas cookies. He has made his customary visit on this winter’s solstice. He has no gift to leave her, only the hope that she will see a brighter year, when the sun returns.

For in the hopes that she gets better (in real life.) Sorry about the suckiness of the art but I had to do it in a low-quality program . . . I had the writing sitting around since a few days ago and I'm a bit more happy with it.

OMG! I still love you forever. That hasn't changed. But I do feel better for having read this! Thanks! *Happy dance for the toddy* :tux:

Wow, a beautiful description to match the picture. I love the composition of it, how you can see that brightly lit window, the only splash of color in the picture. It emphasizes the bittersweet loneliness of it. I also adore how you shaded his face, and his expression just helps to tell the story. Excellent!
